Kicking off 2019 with a dose of Augmented Reality

2019 New Years Party Hats and Glasses—each January you’re guaranteed to see selfies of friends and strangers wearing the new year as they party through midnight.

This year there was something else you were certain to see: 2018 Augmented Reality selfies across Snapchat and Facebook. It’s assumed, it’s common, it’s become…normal.

That’s exactly why By & Large created our 2019 New Year’s Party Hat Snapchat Lens and Party Glasses Facebook Camera Effect because we knew people were going to use them, it’s fun and it’s what a lot of people do.

For Snapchat that may not be surprising. Their mostly under-30 user base is super-engaged on the channel, re-writing expectations of brand engagement and very used to transforming their face into animals, characters and stylized art.

You may not have realized that it’s been over a year since Facebook announced it had integrated AR experiences for over 2 Billion users. And if only 10% of them have gotten used to using Facebook AR, that’s a user base as large as Snapchat’s total 2018 numbers.

That’s why entertainment properties like The X Files, Dr. Who and Game of Thrones are active in Facebook AR. That’s why musicians from U2 to Rhianna to to Marshmello to MAE are active in Facebook AR. That’s why brands like Estee Lauder, Ford, McDonalds and Sephora are active in Facebook AR.

Brands win big by being where people want to be. This isn’t just for puppy dog faces any more 🐶.

So smile—it’s 2019! And the future is already augmented.
